Casino KYC explained

When online casinos ask for ID, what “KYC” means in the terms, why “no KYC” is rarely what it sounds like – with what each casino we profile states in its own terms.

“KYC” (know your customer) is the identity check a casino runs before, during or after you play. Almost every casino can require it; the question is when and how clearly its terms say so. This guide explains the mechanics and shows what each casino we profile states.

What KYC means at a casino

Licensed operators must verify who their customers are – to prevent underage play, fraud and money laundering. In practice this means you may be asked for a government ID, a proof of address (often not older than 90 days) and sometimes a proof of payment method or source of funds. Crypto casinos are not exempt: their licences and payment partners impose the same type of duties.

When casinos ask

  • At registration – some regulated brands verify before you can deposit at all.
  • Before the first withdrawal – the most common trigger; a few casinos state it explicitly.
  • At thresholds – cumulative deposits or withdrawals above an amount the casino sets (and often does not publish).
  • “At any time” – the standard clause: verification may be requested at the casino’s discretion, and withdrawals can be held until it is complete.

Why “no KYC casino” is usually a misleading label

Of the 15 casinos we profile, every one reserves the right to request identity documents. 7 publish specific triggers; the rest use general wording. A casino that lets you deposit and play without documents can still require full verification the moment you try to withdraw a meaningful amount. We therefore never list casinos as “no KYC” – we show what the terms say and label it May be required or Before first withdrawal.

What the 15 casinos state in their own terms

Each row is taken from the casino’s binding terms or help pages, with the evidence level we recorded. Open the profile for the full clause and the source.

Source of funds: the second check after identity

Identity verification answers who you are. A source-of-funds (SoF) or source-of-wealth (SoW) check answers where the money comes from. Anti-money-laundering rules in licensed jurisdictions require operators to make this second check when deposits, withdrawals or play patterns cross a risk threshold – and most terms let the casino ask for it at any time.

What casinos typically request

  • Bank or card statements showing the account that funded the deposits, usually the last three months.
  • Payslips, tax returns or a letter from an employer for salary income; business accounts for the self-employed.
  • Sale contracts, inheritance or dividend paperwork for one-off sums.
  • For crypto players: exchange account statements or a transaction history that ties the depositing wallet to you. A screenshot of a wallet balance is rarely enough on its own, because it does not show where the coins came from.

When the request comes

The terms we recorded describe three kinds of trigger: a published amount, an unpublished risk threshold, or a pattern. Mr Green states a deposit threshold of 2,000 EUR on a rolling 180 days after which identity must be confirmed within 30 days, and names “source-of-funds information” among the documents it can require (Terms 4.1–4.5). Mirax makes KYC obligatory at a cumulative payments sum of 2,000 EUR and lists source of funds/wealth among possible checks (Terms 9–10). Shuffle may require source of funds or wealth under Terms 5.4 and sets its withdrawal threshold “at its discretion”. Gamdom describes a third verification level, “proof of funds”, that is only requested when “specific financial thresholds are met and/or if specific risk factors arise” – without publishing the thresholds. LeoVegas (Terms 8.2) and 888casino (User Agreement 4) reserve the right to ask for source of wealth or funds, occupation and financial standing at any time. All quotes are from the binding documents with the check date shown on each profile.

Why the two checks are handled differently

  • Timing: identity is usually verified once; source-of-funds checks can repeat as your deposits grow or your pattern changes (“withdrawal without commensurate play” is a trigger Mr Green names explicitly).
  • Consequence while open: most terms allow the casino to hold withdrawals until the documents are accepted. LeoVegas adds that funds never used for wagering are only returned after an “extended due diligence procedure”.
  • Standard of proof: identity has a clear pass/fail (the document matches you). Source of funds is a judgement by the operator’s compliance team, which is why review times vary and follow-up questions are common.

Privacy considerations

Financial documents are more sensitive than an ID card. Before uploading, check the casino’s privacy policy for retention periods and whether data is shared with group companies or third-party verification providers (several of the casinos we profile use external KYC providers). Send documents only through the account area or the address named in the terms, redact what is not requested (for example other transactions on a statement, if the casino allows it), and keep your own record of what you sent and when. None of this is legal advice; if a request seems disproportionate, the regulator named on the profile is the body that can hear a complaint.

How to make verification painless

  1. Register with your real name and address – mismatches are the most common reason for delays.
  2. Have an ID and a recent proof of address ready before you deposit – and, if you plan to deposit larger sums, a document that shows where the money comes from (see source of funds).
  3. Deposit from a wallet or payment method in your own name where the casino requires it.
  4. Read the “withdrawal rules” on the profile: some terms require each deposit to be wagered at least once before withdrawal.

If verification fails or the account is restricted

Documents are rejected more often for blurry photos, cropped edges, mismatched names or an expired proof of address than for anything suspicious. Resubmit once with the problem fixed, and ask support which document failed. If the casino restricts or closes the account instead, read what happens when a casino closes your account for the balance rules and complaint routes by licence, and what to do about a rejected or pending withdrawal.

KYC, privacy and our research

We do not deposit, play or complete KYC at the casinos we describe, so nothing here is a report of our own experience. Every statement is quoted from the casino’s documents with a check date. See the KYC policy check in our methodology, and remember that identity checks are also a player-protection measure. 18+.
