Responsible gambling tools explained: limits, cooling-off, self-exclusion

How deposit, loss, wager and session limits, cooling-off, reality checks and self-exclusion work, what MGA, UKGC and Curaçao require, and what 11 casinos offer.

By Torben Noé · Updated 8 Oct 2026 · Casino facts as of 12 Oct 2026 · Methodology v1.6

Deposit limits, loss limits, cooling-off periods and self-exclusion are the controls a casino gives you over your own account – and they do very different jobs. A limit caps money or time and can be loosened again after a waiting period; a cooling-off period locks the account for days or weeks; self-exclusion closes it for months, years or for good, and is designed so that you cannot undo it on a bad night. This guide explains each tool, what regulators require, why offshore crypto casinos sit outside national schemes such as GAMSTOP, and which tools the 15 casinos we profile say they offer.

Seven tools, seven different jobs

  • Deposit limit – caps what you can pay in per day, week or month. It controls money entering the account, not a balance already there.
  • Loss limit – caps net losses in a period and stops play once they reach the figure.
  • Wager limit – caps total stakes in a period, win or lose. Under the MGA Player Protection Directive (art. 14(1)(b)) bonus money need not count towards it.
  • Session or time limit – caps how long you can play. Several casinos only offer a reminder instead.
  • Reality check / activity reminder – a pop-up at an interval you choose that shows time spent, sometimes amounts wagered and won or lost, and makes you confirm before play continues. A reminder, not a limit.
  • Cooling-off (time-out, take-a-break) – a short lock on the whole account, typically 24 hours to six weeks, that usually ends automatically.
  • Self-exclusion – a long lock, usually from six months upwards, indefinite or permanent, built to be hard or impossible to reverse.

The rule that matters most: tightening is instant, loosening waits

Every serious framework builds in the same asymmetry, so that a decision to spend more cannot be executed in the same session. The MGA Directive says a notice making a limit more stringent “shall be effective immediately” (art. 14(7)), while one making it less stringent or removing it “shall be effective only after the lapse of twenty-four (24) hours” (art. 14(8)). The Curaçao Gaming Authority’s 2025 policy applies the same 24-hour rule to deposit limits (section 10.1). Among the casinos we profile, Mr Green writes it into its terms (Terms 8.4.1: decreases immediate, increases or removals after a 24-hour cooling-off) and Betway’s responsible-gaming page says deposit-limit increases take effect after 24 hours (section 3.1). If a casino lets you raise a limit on the spot, treat that as a gap.

What regulators require

Malta Gaming Authority (MGA)

The Player Protection Directive (Directive 2 of 2018, v3 January 2023) is the most precise public rulebook among the licences we see. Licensees must offer self-exclusion “for a definite or indefinite period of time” (art. 11(1)); extending one is effective immediately (art. 11(9)); a request to lift a definite exclusion takes effect no sooner than 24 hours after the casino agrees, an indefinite one no sooner than seven days (art. 11(10)) – and the casino may reject the request or prohibit lifting exclusions altogether (art. 11(7)). Excluded players keep the right to withdraw their funds (art. 13A). Casinos must offer deposit and/or wagering limits (art. 14(1)) and ask you about them before your first deposit (art. 14(3)); loss and session limits are optional (art. 14(2)). The MGA’s FAQ on mandatory tools adds that reality checks are mandatory. Betway, LeoVegas and Mr Green in our set state MGA licences, which is why their terms read like the directive.

UK Gambling Commission (UKGC)

The Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice require remote licensees to offer a time-out of 24 hours, one week, one month, or “such other period as the customer may reasonably request, up to a maximum of 6 weeks” (SR code 3.3.4). For self-exclusion (SR code 3.5.3) licensees must refuse service to self-excluded customers, remove them from marketing within two days, close the account and return the funds – blocking withdrawals while still accepting bets is explicitly not enough – and offer an automated online process. British-licensed sites must also take part in GAMSTOP. None of our 15 profiles is based on a UK-licensed version of a site, so these rules are a benchmark here, not a finding.

Curaçao Gaming Authority (CGA)

The old criticism of Curaçao was that nothing was written down. That changed with the Responsible Gaming Policy for Licensed Operators (v1.0, 17 April 2025), which lists cooling-off periods, self-exclusion and deposit limits among the mandatory elements of a licence (section 3). Cooling-off must be offered for 24 hours, 7 days, 1 month and 3 months and take effect immediately (9.1); self-exclusion must offer at least a one-year option, with 1, 3, 5 and 10 years and lifetime, must be completable fully online without operator approval, takes effect immediately and “is irreversible and irrevocable for the duration of the exclusion period selected” – after it ends you must ask in writing to be unblocked (9.2). Deposit limits follow the 24-hour rule (10.1); reality checks and time limits are only “other tools as necessary based on risk profile” (section 13). The policy has a phased implementation schedule (section 4), so some Curaçao-licensed casinos still publish shorter self-exclusion menus than the policy lists. Five of the 15 casinos we profile state a Curaçao licence; what we could confirm about each is in the licence guide.

Issuer-only registers

For the two casinos whose licence we could only find in an issuer’s own list (Anjouan), we found no published player-protection rules. Their tools are their own policy, enforceable only through their terms.

National self-exclusion schemes vs casino tools

A casino’s self-exclusion covers that casino – often only that brand. Mr Green’s terms say so plainly: self-exclusion “is only specific to the brand where you request the Self-Exclusion”, with no automatic exclusion from other brands in the evoke group (Terms 8.8.2); the MGA Directive permits this “in the absence of a unified self-exclusion database” (art. 11). A national scheme closes the gap by excluding you from every operator licensed in the country at once:

  • GAMSTOP (Great Britain) – covers “online gambling companies licensed in Great Britain”; shortest period 6 months, longest 5 years, with optional automatic renewal (GAMSTOP).
  • Spelpaus (Sweden) – run by the regulator Spelinspektionen; 10 days, 1, 3 or 6 months, or “until further notice (at least 12 months)”, across all Swedish-licensed gambling; it “cannot be cancelled or ended before the date you choose” (Spelpaus.se).
  • BetGuard (Ontario) – launched in May 2026 by iGaming Ontario for all regulated igaming sites in the province; 6 months, 1 year, 5 years or a custom term (iGaming Ontario).

None of these schemes covers an offshore crypto casino. A casino licensed in Curaçao or listed by Anjouan is not a GAMSTOP participant, so a GAMSTOP registration does not block it. If you have self-excluded nationally and want the same protection at crypto casinos, you need to self-exclude at each one and add blocking software – both are covered on our responsible gambling page.

What the 15 casinos we profile state

The table is generated from our records of each casino’s own documents on the date shown. Every entry is a casino statement – we did not open accounts to test the tools, and most sit behind login. “Not stated” means we read the responsible-gambling page, help centre and terms and did not find the tool; it does not mean the casino lacks it, and our method books it as “not verified yet”, not as a finding against the casino.

The same matrix – tool by tool, with self-exclusion duration, source document, evidence level and date – is published as a reusable dataset with CSV/JSON download: which casinos have deposit limits and self-exclusion (CC BY 4.0).

Clause references and nuances the table cannot show:

  • BitStarz – FAQ: deposit, loss, wagering and session limits; cooling-off from 1 day to 6 months; self-exclusion “from 1 day to permanently” via support.
  • mBit – Terms 15 “Personal Limits”: deposit, loss, wager and session limits, a Cooling-Off Limit and a Self-Exclusion Limit; help centre: self-exclusion of 6 or 12 months; an indefinite exclusion cannot be re-opened.
  • Mirax – RG policy lists all six tools, but deposit limits “can be applied to fiat currency deposits only” and “cryptocurrency deposits still can be successfully processed during an active Cooling-off period”. For a crypto player, these two tools do not do what their names suggest.
  • Roobet – help centre: wager, loss and deposit limits; a 24-hour cooldown as step one; self-exclusion from 1 day to 1 year or permanently (RG policy: “a maximum period of 5 (five) years or permanently”). No session limit found.
  • Shuffle – RG policy: self-exclusion for 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 6 months or permanently; wager and loss limits. After a 24-hour cooldown Shuffle e-mails you to extend, and “if you do not extend the self-exclusion period within 24 hours of receipt of the email, your account will be unrestricted” – a time-out with an opt-in, not a lock. No deposit or session limit described.
  • BC.Game – Terms 16.4 lists deposit limits, wagering limits, session reminders and cooling-off only “where supported by the platform”, and no page shows them, so we record them as not determined. RG page: self-exclusion for “a minimum of 6 months”; 7-day cooling-off.
  • Gamdom – self-exclusion tool for “1, 5, or 8 days”; “for longer breaks, our support team can assist with closing your account”; Terms 3.2 names no durations. No limit tools described.
  • Betway – RG page 3.1: deposit limits, increases after 24 hours; 3.2: session reminders (not a limit); 3.3: take a break from 24 hours to 30 days; 3.4: self-exclusion from 24 hours to 30 days or indefinite, with “a minimum exclusion period of at least 6 months, once indefinite exclusion is opted for”. No permanent option described.
  • LeoVegas – Terms 19.1: self-exclusion “for a definite or an indefinite period of time or permanently”; 19.3: deposit, wager, loss and time-per-session limits; 19.2: a cool-off period before reopening. Shortest period not stated.
  • Mr Green – Terms 8.3: Activity Check, Loss Limit, Deposit Limit, Take-a-Break (24 hours to 6 weeks); 8.4.1: decreases immediate, increases after 24 hours; 8.8.1: self-exclusion of six months, nine months, one year, three years or indefinite; 8.9.1: an indefinite exclusion cannot be lifted before one year, then needs a seven-day cooling-off, and the casino “reserves the right not to allow you to return”; 8.8.2: brand-only scope. No wager or session limit found.
  • 888casino – RG policy: deposit limit in the cashier or via live chat; Take a Break from 1 day to six weeks; self-exclusion of “six month or above”, up to 72 hours to apply, across the group’s sites “to the extent detected by us”. No loss, wager or session limit or permanent option mentioned.

Two patterns stand out. The MGA-licensed brands publish the full mechanism – periods, waiting times, reversal rules – in their terms; the crypto casinos mostly describe a menu in a help article and leave the mechanics unstated. And “permanent” is not a standard term: three casinos offer it by name, two call it indefinite with no reopening, two make an indefinite exclusion revocable after a minimum period, and one does not describe it at all.

What “permanent” self-exclusion really means

Permanent self-exclusion is the one tool deliberately built to defeat your future self. At the strict end, the casino says the account can never be reopened (mBit, LeoVegas) or the regulator calls the exclusion “irreversible and irrevocable” for the chosen period (CGA 9.2.4). At the softer end, an indefinite exclusion can be lifted after a minimum period and a cooling-off – one year plus seven days at Mr Green, six months at Betway – and only if the casino agrees. Assume the strict reading: you will not get the account back, bonus balances will be gone, and your real-money balance should be withdrawn first. The MGA (art. 13A) and the UKGC (3.5.3) require that excluded players can still withdraw; where the terms are silent, ask support in writing how remaining funds are returned before you activate the exclusion. If a payout then stalls, see our guide on rejected or pending withdrawals.

Why crypto casinos’ tools vary so much

The regulator sets the floor: an MGA licensee must offer limits, self-exclusion and reality checks by directive; a Curaçao licensee has had a written minimum only since 2025, with a phased roll-out; an issuer-listed casino has none. The tools are often built around fiat rails – Mirax says so openly, and a limit that ignores on-chain deposits is half a limit. And crypto makes spending harder to see – balances in coins, moving prices, no bank statement – so write down each deposit in your own currency and compare it with the limit you set.

Setting the tools so they actually work

  1. Set limits before the first deposit, not after a loss. The MGA requires casinos to ask at that moment (art. 14(3)); if yours does not, open the account settings yourself.
  2. Match the tool to the problem. Spending too much → deposit or loss limit. Playing too long → session limit, or a reality check if none exists. Need a break → cooling-off. Need to stop → self-exclusion.
  3. Check what the limit covers. Fiat only? Casino only, or sportsbook too? One brand, or the group? The answer is in the policy, not on the settings screen.
  4. Keep one account. Limits and exclusions are enforced per account; a second account breaches the terms and punches a hole in your own protection.
  5. Withdraw before a long exclusion, then request it in writing and keep the confirmation. If the casino later lets you play, that record is your evidence in a complaint.
  6. Add blocking software on your devices if you have excluded yourself anywhere; options are on our responsible gambling page.

When the tools are missing

If a casino’s pages do not describe a limit or an exclusion, ask support in writing: can I set a deposit limit, does it cover crypto deposits, how long before an increase applies, can I self-exclude permanently, and how are remaining funds paid out? Save the reply. In our Smarter Score, responsible gambling carries 7 % of the weight: limit tools (deposit, loss, wager, session), cooling-off plus a self-exclusion of at least six months, and links to independent help. A tool we could not find earns no points but is booked as “not verified yet”, so a thin help centre lowers a casino’s evidence coverage rather than counting as a confirmed absence. A casino closing an account for responsible-gambling reasons is a separate situation – see what to do when a casino closes your account.

If gambling is a problem

Help is free, confidential and available around the clock. GambleAware, Gamblers Anonymous and Gambling Therapy (multilingual, international) are starting points; GamCare and further services and blocking tools are listed on our responsible gambling page. Gambling is for adults aged 18+ only, and no bonus, limit or system changes the fact that the house has the edge.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a cooling-off period and self-exclusion?

A cooling-off period (time-out, take-a-break) is a short lock – 24 hours to a few weeks, up to six weeks under UK rules and three months in the CGA menu – that usually ends automatically. Self-exclusion is a long lock, typically six months to several years, indefinite or permanent, and designed to be hard to reverse.

Can I increase my deposit limit straight away?

At a casino following MGA or CGA rules, no: a stricter limit applies immediately, a looser one after at least 24 hours. Mr Green (Terms 8.4.1) and Betway (RG page 3.1) state the 24-hour rule explicitly. Casinos that do not publish the mechanism may apply increases instantly – ask before relying on the limit.

Does GAMSTOP block crypto casinos?

No. GAMSTOP covers online gambling companies licensed in Great Britain. A casino licensed in Curaçao or listed by Anjouan is not a participant, so you would need to self-exclude at each such casino individually and use blocking software on your devices.

Is self-exclusion permanent?

Only if you choose a permanent or indefinite option and the casino’s policy says it cannot be reopened. Definite periods end on their date (at Curaçao-licensed casinos you then have to ask in writing to be unblocked); indefinite exclusions at some casinos can be lifted after a minimum period and a cooling-off. Read the self-exclusion clause before you activate it.

What is a reality check?

A reminder that interrupts play at an interval you set, shows how long you have been playing – often with amounts wagered and won or lost – and asks you to confirm before continuing. Mandatory for MGA licensees, optional under the CGA policy. It limits nothing by itself; pair it with a session or loss limit if you want a hard stop.

Conclusion

The tools are only as strong as the rules behind them. Where a regulator writes the mechanics down – the MGA, the UKGC and, since 2025, the CGA – tightening is instant, loosening takes 24 hours and self-exclusion is hard to undo. Where it does not, the casino’s own policy is the whole story, and the table above shows how often it leaves the mechanics unstated. Set your limits before the first deposit, check what they cover, keep the confirmation, and remember that no national scheme reaches an offshore crypto casino for you. Gambling is for adults aged 18+; if it stops being entertainment, the services on our responsible gambling page are there for you.
